“Whom shepherds guard and angels sing?”
The Council of Chalcedon gathered in 451 AD to attempt a human definition of Jesus. He is recognized as second member of Trinity Who is fully God & fully human. One person with two natures. All attributes of each nature preserved mysteriously- not in combination – alone.
He is Deity.
He is human.
King of Kings.
Prince of Peace
Yet, also He was born
in flesh… He lived & grew…
in flesh… He died & rose
He’s Creator & Christ.
The One Who Is.
Who Is to Come.
Jesus’ Identity is established –
mysteriously eternal, ever-Present…
yet sacrificially tender,
The past eight weeks I’ve been a part of an online study of church history.
The timing – truly amazing.
We studied the cycles of the church being in positions of power and persecution leading up to election. We studied heresy and orthodoxy. An we studied some outstanding endure-ers for the sake of the Gospel during the first 500 years.
The study, though simple & succint, nurtured seeds- of remembering… and anticipating.. -in me. Seeds that need some tending.
So, I’ll intermix some reflections here throughout the remainder of Advent.
A hardy thank you to IF: &Jennie Allen for producing these studies. And a heart overflowing with deep gratefulness to all those who study & share in IF:Equip.
Thank you to the hearts & minds in the Voxer corner, too.
Scripture-saturating friends & family… Past & Present. Near & Far. Thank you for walking in the Way, the Truth, and the Life…wrestling through to clarity… with humility… and sharing wisdom… because you know the painstaking press of ignorance and pride.
Blessed beyond measure… to remember a “great cloud of witnesses” pioneered to preserve the Gospel Life. Remembering to Remember… steeping in Christ’s permeating nature & His Bride overtime… this Advent.
“What Child is this who,
laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.”
